How to Gear the Kids Up for Winter on the Mountain

As you prepare for your winter outdoors adventure, it is important to be prepared whether you are skiing, sledding, snowshoeing or simply exploring the great outdoors. Ensuring your kids have the correct layers will certainly make or break an outdoor adventure.  This season we are highlighting colors such as Neon Orange, Pink, and Aruba Blue to pick a few. It is always helpful to have your kids sporting bright colors to be able to spot them on the hills, but most importantly, warm on the slopes!

No matter what activity your kids intend to do this winter, we must remember our layers. Starting an outfit with the Helly Hansen base layers will certainly set the kids up for a great day outdoors. The Helly Hansen Lifa Merino Kids Base layer sets are professional grade kids' base layers that use a soft and unique 2-layer Lifa fiber technology next to the skin to stay dry. They use a premium non itch 100% Merino wool exterior with amazing insulation and wicking properties.

The next piece to layer over a merino wool kids' base layer would be a mid-layer like the Helly Hansen Jr Daybreaker Kids Jacket. This is the perfect mid-layer that is made of Polartec 100g lightweight fleece making it a very versatile piece. It features a chin guard for comfort, raglan sleeves for more movement as well as thumbholes for a secure fit. Now it is time for the jacket. The kids will need a jacket that is waterproof, windproof, and breathable. The Helly Hansen Traverse Kids Jacket fits the description perfectly. It also includes a powder skirt to block any snow that may get in, reflective details, detachable and adjustable hood, adjustable cuffs and chin guard. For the little kids, the Rider Kids Jacket does the trick. While the Traverse jacket is very versatile there may be days where the weather has calmed for a beautiful blue bird day. On these days you can find many other options such as the Classic Down Jacket from Arctica, the Helly Hansen Legend Jacket and more under our Jackets, Coats, & Outerwear section.

To pair with those awesome jackets, we would suggest the Roxy Backyard Girls Snow Pants, which are waterproof, insulated, breathable with adjustable Velcro tabs and boot gaiters, which wrap around the boot tightly ensuring no snow gets in! These great snowpants are also available in bright colors so you can always find your skier in a crowd. For the boys, we have the Helly Hansen Jr Legendary Kids Snow Pants which have all of the same features as the Roxy Backyard Girls Snowpants; however, they also have an extendable leg length for growing kids! Another easy option is a great kids one-piece snowsuit including the Scout Kids Snowsuit, which features a cozy fleece lining to keep little ones warm and cozy on the mountain.

Finally, the last and most important part to layering and the most essential items you will need are hats, gloves and neckwarmers! We have you "covered" with Army Leather Heli Ski Gloves from Hestra, The North Face Mitts, and the Burton Youth Clava, which fits perfectly under a helmet. When the temperatures are in the teens or below, you certainly want to be fully covered with no exposed skin on the face, neck or hands and make sure each of the kids has a pack of the shake-activated heat warmers for both toes and hands. Those are great and will last the whole day.

The most important tip for enjoying winter is to make sure you have all of the right gear. If the kids are warm, they can't help but be happy outside on the mountain. We carry all of the trusted outdoor brands to get kids outfitted for the season such as Helly Hansen, The North Face, Arctica, Roxy, Burton and more.
