For many kids as the end of school draws near, families are getting ready for summer including going away to sleepaway camp. For some, going away to sleepaway camp is a much anticipated time of year to gain some independence, see some old friends and spend summer days outside. It is a thrilling milestone that blends anticipation with a touch of nervous energy. The journey begins with the meticulous packing of trunks, filling them with flashlights, sleeping bags, pillows, sheets, and a healthy supply of clothing meant to get dirty. As the departure date approaches, a mix of homesickness and excitement sets in. Some kids will go to camp with friends from school or a sibling, but some will arrive on their own. It will take about a week to adjust, but being around other kids and camp counselors will help make the transition easier. Arriving at the campground in anticipation and excitement, moving in and meeting new kids will help ease the nervousness.
Once settled into bunk beds or cabins and getting to know some of the kids and camp counselors, all of the daily activities turn into active engagement and learniing. With the great outdoors as the backdrop, campers get off their screens and become part of nature. Camps often offer outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, sports, canoeing, music, and various art and crafts. Meals are often communal with a lot of excitement and activity. Don't forget kids often share in clean-up duties! In the evenings, counselors often build a campfire and have song-alongs and engage in community bonding.
A sleepaway camp experience will build independence, responsibility, maturity, personal growth and foster lifeling friendships. Campers will also develop social skills, learn how to contribute to community and perhaps leadership skills. Overcoming the initial challenges of being away from parents boosts self-esteem and instills confidence. When the summer finally ends, campers return home and can't wait to go back again next year.
